Sembalun, Senaru, or Torean – Which Route is Right for You?
Mount Rinjani offers three main trekking routes, each with its own highlights, difficulty levels, and landscapes.
SEMBALUN ROUTE
Starts from the eastern side of Mount Rinjani, this is the most direct and popular path to the summit. The trail begins with open savannah and sweeping mountain views, gradually rising before a steep final push to the peak.
– Ideal for 2D1N, 3D2N, or 4D3N summit expeditions
Easier first day, intense climb on Day 2
– Stunning sunrise views from the summit (3,726 m)
– Less shaded — hotter during midday
– Best choice (2D1N) if your main goal is to reach the summit
SENARU ROUTE
Best Forest Experience & Gradual Ascent
Starting from the north, the Senaru route is known for its dense tropical forest, wildlife, and steady elevation gain. It’s cooler and shaded, making it a great alternative to the exposed Sembalun trail.
– 2D1N trek reaches Sangkareang (second summit) only, not main peak
– 3D2N or 4D3N treks can include lake and connect to Sembalun descent
– Rich in jungle sights, monkeys, and forest sounds-
– Perfect for nature lovers or those avoiding strong sun
TOREAN ROUTE
Located on the southern side, Torean is a less-traveled route offering dramatic views of waterfalls, bamboo bridges, and rivers. It’s mostly used for descent after visiting the crater lake.
– Not used for summit climbs due to steep and technical ascent
-Excellent for descending after a summit or lake visit
Can be part of 3D2N or 4D3N itineraries
-Fewer crowds, peaceful experience, but requires strong knees and balance
– Great for experienced hikers who enjoy scenic, off-the-beaten-path routes

2nd Summit – Mount sangkareang
Mount Sangkareang standing proudly alongside the majestic Mount Rinjani, perfect for adventure seeking for a slightly less demanding alternative to Mount Rinjani’s summit.
At an elevation of around 3,100 meters above sea level, trekkers will be offered via Senaru route. The second summit rewards trekkers with panoramic views of Mount Rinjani’s towering peak, the sparkling Segara Anak crater lake, and sweeping vistas over lush forests and distant coastlines.
